Two years ago, my brother-in-law decided in the first week of November that he wanted to take the whole family for Umrah over the Christmas holidays. Everyone told him he had left it too late. He had not, quite. He got the last quad room at a decent hotel in Makkah, a one-stop flight from Birmingham, and a lot of very useful advice about what he should have done sooner. The trip was wonderful, but it cost him about £300 more per person than it would have done if he had booked in September.
If you are reading this at the end of October and thinking about December, you are in a similar position. December is one of the most popular months for Umrah from the UK, and the Christmas break is the busiest part of it. The good news is that there is still time, as long as you move quickly and know which parts of the process take longest.
December Umrah packages from UK are still available for this winter, but the best prices are in the first half of the month, before UK schools break up around 18 December. Ten nights in early December can start at around £800–£1,100 per person when sharing a room, while the Christmas week often costs £1,300–£1,700. Book within the next two to three weeks, apply for the Saudi eVisa online, and get your Meningitis ACWY jab at least 10 days before you fly.
Early December or Christmas Week
December is really two different months for UK pilgrims. The first half is calm and fairly priced. The second half, once schools close for Christmas, is one of the busiest times of the year for British families travelling for Umrah.
| Early December (1–17 Dec 2026) | Christmas break (18 Dec 2026–4 Jan 2027) | |
| Typical price, ten nights, sharing | £800–£1,100 per person | £1,300–£1,700 per person |
| Flights from the UK | Good availability, midweek deals | Busy, especially direct flights |
| Crowds at the Haram | Moderate | Busy, with many UK and European families |
| Hotel choice near the Haram | Wide | Limited at this stage |
| Best for | Adults, retired couples, flexible workers | Families with school-age children |
School holiday dates vary between councils, so check yours. Most schools in England are expected to break up around 18 December 2026 and return in early January.
If you can travel in early December, you will get better value and an easier trip. If you have children at school, the Christmas break may be your only option, and that is fine. It is a special time to be in Makkah, with many British families around, and children often remember it for years. You just need to accept a higher price and book quickly.
One small tip for Christmas-week travel: flying out on Christmas Day itself or on 26 December is often cheaper than leaving on 19 or 20 December, when everyone else does.
Your Six-Week Countdown to a December Umrah
With December only a few weeks away, the order you do things in matters. This is the countdown I would follow if I were booking today.
Six weeks before (now): check every passport in the group. Saudi Arabia requires at least six months’ validity from your date of entry. If anyone needs a renewal, apply straight away. The standard online service usually takes around three weeks, and the fast-track service costs much more.
Five weeks before: compare quotes and book your package. At this stage, good hotels near the Haram are going quickly, especially for the Christmas week. Pay the deposit by credit card if you can.
Four weeks before: apply for the Saudi tourist eVisa at visa.visitsaudi.com if it is not included in your package. British passport holders and many UK residents qualify. It costs SAR 535, about £105–£115, including medical insurance, and is usually approved quickly. Do not leave it to the last week in case of problems.
Three weeks before: book your Meningitis ACWY jab at a pharmacy or travel clinic. It must be given at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia, and you should bring the certificate with you.
Two weeks before: once your visa is issued, open the Nusuk app and book your Umrah permit. It is free. Christmas week slots, especially at weekends, fill up quickly.
The final week: confirm hotel names, flight times and transfer details in writing. Save copies of passports, visas and bookings on your phone and print a set too.
The passport check is the one step people forget most often, and it is the hardest to fix at the last minute. Do it today.
December Weather and What to Pack
December is one of the most comfortable months for Umrah, but it is not the same in both cities, and many first-timers are caught out by the evenings in Madinah.
- Makkah:daytime temperatures are usually around 28–31°C, with warm evenings around 20–22°C. The Tawaf and Sa’i are comfortable at almost any time of day.
- Madinah:noticeably cooler. Days are often around 23–26°C, and nights can drop to 12–15°C. Inside the Prophet’s Mosque the air conditioning adds to the chill.
From my own December trips, these are the things worth packing that people often forget:
- A light jumper or cardigan for Madinah evenings and early Fajr.
- A thin shawl or scarf for the air-conditioned prayer halls.
- Comfortable, broken-in sandals or trainers. You will walk many kilometres.
- A small bag for your shoes in the Haram, so you are not hunting for them after prayers.
- Unscented toiletries for the state of Ihram.
- A refillable bottle for Zamzam water during the day.
- A plug adaptor (Saudi Arabia uses the same three-pin plug as the UK in many hotels, but not all).
For men, two sets of Ihram are useful, so one can be washed while the other is worn. For children, pack a few familiar snacks and something quiet to do on the flight. A happy child makes the long days far easier for everyone.
Choosing Umrah Packages from the UK at Short Notice
Booking late does not mean you have to accept whatever is left. It does mean being clear about your priorities and checking each quote carefully, because you have less time to fix mistakes.
- Decide what matters most. For most families it is hotel distance. A hotel within five to ten minutes of the Haram makes a huge difference with children or older parents. If that pushes the budget, save on flights instead by taking a one-stop route.
- Ask for named hotels. At short notice, some firms offer “4-star or similar”. Ask which hotel, and check the walking distance on a map yourself.
- Check the airline and airport.Saudia flies direct to Jeddah from Heathrow and Manchester. From other UK airports, one-stop routes via Istanbul or Gulf hubs are common and often cheaper.
- Confirm what is included.Visa, meals, transfers and the Makkah to Madinah journey should all be listed clearly.
- Check the firm.Any UK package with flights should be ATOL-protected. Search the ATOL number on the Civil Aviation Authority website, and pay by credit card for Section 75 cover on purchases between £100 and £30,000.
It helps to have a clear example to compare against. The Umrah packages from UK offered by Islamic Travel set out the hotel names, their distance from the Haram and what is included, and they are ATOL-protected. Laying other quotes beside a package like that makes it quick to see which offers are complete and which have gaps, which is exactly what you need when time is short.
If the dates you want are full, ask to be put on a waiting list. Cancellations do happen in December, and a firm that knows you are ready to book will often call you first.
