Exploring Japan's Culture and History in a Campervan

Do you remember how you were first introduced to the vibrant world of Japan? Was it through the entertaining world of anime or through the mouth-watering cuisine? Perhaps you came across an old samurai film or were interested in the stories of the legendary Yakuza? Japan is a land filled with so much rich history and culture that it can take ages to unravel even one aspect of society.

So, as the premium campervan rental company in all of Japan, let us, Samurai Campers, be your guide in navigating through the history-rich and culture-ridden waters of the land of the rising sun!

How Can You Explore The Culture And History Of Japan In A Campervan?

The vastness of Japanese history is truly unmatched, with its origins estimated to be around 30 thousand years ago. Despite being heavily influenced by its neighbors, Korea and China, Japan has its own identity that cannot be mistaken for another country.

The best way to explore the history and culture of this beautiful land of cherry blossom trees is to visit all the best historical sites for the full Japanese experience. Following is the list of top spots you can visit by campervan in Japan:

1.    Shrines

Japan may seem quite modern, but most people in Japan tend to be quite religious. There have been many great men and women in the history of the country who are still commemorated to this day through their shrines. These shrines have also become tourist spots because of their marvelous architecture and cultural connotations.

Two of the countless famous shrines are the Meiji Jingu and Yasukuni. The Meiji Jingu was built in 1920 for the late Emperor Meiji and his wife as a sign of devotion. On the other hand, the Yasukuni was constructed in 1869 in honor of all the casualties of war.

Both these shrines can be visited in a campervan; however, it is recommended that you park your rental in the parking lot and travel the rest of the way on foot to be respectful of local customs.

2.    Temples

Temples are also a great part of Japanese culture. They are thought to be sacred homes of different deities according to the various religions in the country.

One of the oldest Buddhist temples in the region is the Sensoji Temple. This religious site was built back in 628 AD and rebuilt after World War Two. The Temple itself is dedicated to the goddess of mercy, Kannon Bodhisattva. A magnificent statue of this deity is also present in the Temple, but it has not been put on display for the general public.

Another temple worth noting is the Kiyomizudera Temple, built back in 780 AD. This Temple is renowned for its unique architecture of the Main Hall hanging over a steep cliff. It is truly a marvel showcasing the architectural prowess of the ancient engineers. Each different part of the Temple is dedicated to a different deity, whether it be the statue of Kannon Bodhisattva (goddess of mercy) or the Jishu Shrine of the god of love and good matches Ōkuninushi.

You can visit the Sensoji, Kiyomizudera, and various other temples in Japan in a motorhome for rent from Samurai Campers.

3.    Parks

Japan is a serene country with beautiful natural sites, including the Nagasaki Peace Park. This beautiful park was established to commemorate the atomic bombing of Japan in World War Two. This park is in the city of Nagasaki and has a marking site of the bomb’s hypocentre. This historical site is quite close to the hearts of Japanese people, as approximately 74,000 lives were lost, with thousands of people suffering from the aftereffects of radiation poisoning for decades.

You can also drive your rented campervan to the Nagasaki Peace Park and see the devastation brought on by the age of nuclear warfare first-hand.

4.    Castles

Yes, you read it right! Japan, the land of the rising sun, has real-life castles which you can visit in your campervan. This Japanese fairytale fantasy location called the Osaka Castle, came to life back in 1583. At the time of its conception, it was the biggest castle in all of Japan, which made General Hideyoshi Toyotomi see it as the center of a unified Japan.

These days, the castle does not have much political relevance, but its gorgeous architecture and historical significance have earned it the reputation of the most popular tourist in Japan. You can visit the majestic Osaka Castle in your campervan rental, surrounded by a park of cherry blossoms.

To Wrap Up

Exploring the history and culture of Japan in a campervan is a remarkable experience. Japan offers a rich tapestry of historical and cultural wonders just waiting to be discovered, from the shrines and temples to the remembrance at parks and castles.

As you drive through the picturesque landscapes in the best mid-size camper van rented from Samurai Campers, let the spirit of adventure and curiosity guide you. So, gear up; the wonders of Japan await your exploration!
