A Guide to Explore the Enchanting Realms of Nepal and Bhutan

ENGRNEWSWIRE By ENGRNEWSWIRE August 20, 2025 8 Min Read

Nepal and Bhutan are the two hidden gems of the Himalayas, which remained aloof from the outside world until the date. Nestled in the heart of the Himalayas, these two countries offer a unique blend of spirituality, adventure, and natural beauty. Nepal as the only independent country nourished the cultural essence of the Indian subcontinent while its neighbors went through a series of invasions and occupations. Bhutan on the other hand sustained its world of happiness based on the Karma principle of Tibetan Buddhism.

If you are planning to visit Bhutan or Nepal, or are not sure where to visit in South Asia, then you will be glad to know that it just takes as little as a week to add these countries to your plan.

It is more convenient to visit Bhutan from Nepal as there are direct regular flights. Both countries have different visa policies and travel permits. Here we have narrated visa prerequisites, travel tips and popular Nepal Bhutan Tour packages.

Visa Formalities

Nepal gives visa on arrival

For most travelers, obtaining a visa for Nepal is a straightforward process. Nationals from most countries can obtain a visa upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. You will need to present a passport that is valid for at least six months and provide a passport-sized photo. The fees vary based on the duration of your stay (USD 30 for 15 days and USD 50 for 30 Days).

There is no E-Vasa for Nepal so far, but visitors can apply for an e-visa through the official Nepal Government website, which makes the visa process quicker on arrival at the airport immigration.

A Bhutan Visa requires a Tour Booked

Bhutan has controlled tourism and acquiring a visa involves a few more steps. A Bhutan visa is approved only after you book a tour through a legitimate travel/tour agency. The tour package already includes SDF (Sustainable Development Fee) and visa fees. A visa approval letter will be issued, allowing you to travel to Bhutan. Your actual visa will be stamped upon entering the country.

Best Time to travel:

Since both countries are in the southern slopes of the Himalayas, the weather is best from September to May for the tour of the two countries. During this period, one can experience pleasant temperatures and stunning landscapes, particularly in the autumn months of September to November, when the skies are clear and the colors are vibrant. The autumn season is ideal for a tour as well as trekking in both countries. If you are not trekking, the winter months, from December to February, also provide an excellent opportunity for travelers, as sunny days prevail with crisp, cool air making it comfortable for outdoor activities. Interestingly, traveling in winter can be more economical, as tour costs are generally lower during this time. As spring approaches in March and April, flowers begin to bloom, enhancing the natural beauty of both Nepal and Bhutan, while still maintaining comfortable weather for visitors. The varying climates of these months offer diverse experiences, from tranquil temple visits to adventurous outdoor excursions. Travelers drawn to the serene landscapes will appreciate the less crowded sites during this off-peak time.

Travel Tips for Nepal and Bhutan

  1. Plan Ahead: Both Nepal and Bhutan have diverse terrain and climates. Research the best times to visit, typically from September to November and March to May. Flights to Bhutan may get overbooked during the peak season.
  2. Shoulder seasons: The winter months from December to February are also good for a tour of these two countries. Most of the tour destinations are in the middle hills ranging from 300 m to 2,000 m which makes winter the perfect time to visit, avoiding the crowd.
  3. Pack Wisely: Bring layers, as temperatures can vary significantly between day and night, especially in the mountains.
  4. Health Precautions: Prepare for high altitude if you are trekking. Travelers’ diarrhea, Khumbu cough and dehydration-related issues are common health issues on this trip.
  5. Local Currency: Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the currency in Nepal, while Bhutan uses the Ngultrum (BTN). You can change USD at the airport and also in the cities. Credit cards are accepted in major cities, but having cash on hand for smaller establishments is advisable.
  6. Cultural Respect: Both countries have rich traditions and customs. Dress modestly and take off your shoes, especially when visiting temples and monasteries. Go clockwise around the monuments and don’t sit on the table.

Traveling to Nepal and Bhutan is more than just a trip; it’s an opportunity to immerse yourself in the profound beauty and traditions of the Himalayas kept intact until recently. The mixture of adventure, serenity, and culture makes this journey an essential experience for every avid traveler.
