Does Being Green Have to Be Difficult

You care about the planet but don’t know where to start… Sounds familiar? You’re not sure if it even makes sense. Should you go vegan and get rid of all the plastic straws? With so many questions and information online, you might get the idea that living a more sustainable lifestyle might seem overwhelming at first. And it doesn’t have to be. There are many simple practices and products you can incorporate into your daily routine to help protect the planet – at a minimal cost to you. No need to sacrifice too much, starve to death or put yourself between the axe and a tree trunk.

Everyday Sustainability

One of the easiest ways to be more environmentally friendly is to follow the 3 Rs – reduce, reuse, and recycle. Start by cutting down on single-use plastics. Bring your own reusable bags when shopping, carry a reusable water bottle, and avoid products with excessive packaging. Composting is another simple way to reduce waste. Instead of throwing away food scraps, compost them to create nutrient-rich soil for your garden. It does two things – help you cut back on waste that has to go to landfills and you can use it in your garden. Win-win. But let’s get back inside. Switching to energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs can also make a significant impact. These use less energy, which reduces your carbon footprint and can also save you money on your utility bills. Remember to turn off lights and unplug devices when they’re not in use to conserve energy further.

Choosing Sustainability

Now, let’s talk about everyday products. We need them, we use them. They’re called essentials for a reason. What you may not know is that there are many sustainable options that can easily fit into your daily life – and budget. For instance, in the bathroom, consider swapping out your traditional towels for bamboo towels. Bamboo is a highly renewable resource that grows quickly and requires fewer pesticides and water than cotton. They’re soft, durable, and an excellent eco-friendly choice.

Organic cotton towels are another great option. Conventional cotton farming can be hard on the environment since it requires heavy use of pesticides and water. Organic cotton, however, is grown without synthetic chemicals, making it better for the planet and safer for your skin.

You might also consider an absorbent bath mat made from sustainable materials. Something made from natural fibres that are both durable and environmentally friendly, bamboo fabric, bamboo wood, cork, diatomite – there are plenty of interesting options. You can make a difference in your kitchen by choosing reusable beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap. These are made from natural materials and can be used over and over again, reducing waste and keeping your food fresh. There’s a recurring theme here – a bigger upfront investment in exchange for more durability and use.

Making a Difference

If you’re looking to make a bigger impact, consider supporting companies that prioritize sustainability. Many brands now focus on eco-friendly practices, from using recycled materials to ensuring fair labour practices. Of course, by committing a high road, they’re also bearing higher costs, which then often translate into a higher price tag. But if you have the budget for it, you support their efforts to protect the planet if you buy their products. A word of warning here. It’s best to do a little research to avoid falling for good marketing but poor product or practices. Sustainability is definitely a trend however necessary, but brands like to make big claims that are often not supported. Look for certificates and stamps of approval from reliable organisations on your products. If you want to take things a step further, you can try reducing meat consumption. This industry is a significant source of greenhouse gases, so by eating less meat, you can help reduce your carbon footprint. It’s not a lot, but it’s something. Plus, plant-based meals are good for you.

Small Changes – Big Impact

Being green doesn’t have to be difficult. You can make some simple changes in your daily habits and choose sustainable products when you can. Remember, every small step counts, and together, we can make a big difference in protecting our planet for future generations.
