Los cronocrímenes
- Director: Nacho Vigalondo
- Cast: Karra Elejalde, Barbara Goenaga, Candela Fernández, Juan Inciarte, Nacho Vigalondo
- Release Date: June 27, 2008
Los Cronocrímenes, or Timecrimes is a great movie that focuses on time travel, which has already been featured in countless other movies. However, this low-budget thriller does it in a way that feels minimalistic, refreshing, and engaging.
The story starts with Héctor who travels an hour back in time, only to experience events he has already seen happen again. Soon, he realizes that the events he experiences are part of a series of unfortunate events that have consequences he did not expect.
It’s one of the best movies about time travel we’ve seen in a while. It juxtaposes an intricate script with a simplistic setting. Time traveling an hour back doesn’t seem like much of an interesting concept, but this movie manages to create a compelling narrative out of it.
Los últimos días
- Director: David Pastor & Àlex Pastor
- Cast: Quim Gutiérrez, Marta Etura, José Coronado, Mikel Iglesias, Leticia Dolera, Iván Massagué
- Release Date: March 27, 2013
If you’re looking for a European sci-fi apocalyptic movie but can’t seem to find one, then Los últimos días, or The Last Days might be that one movie that scratches that itch. It explores several themes, including the increasingly isolated and urban lifestyles that we have become accustomed to as well as an obsession with individualism.
The movie is about an epidemic called “the Panic” where people start to die due to convulsions because of agoraphobia which causes them to perceive their environment to be unsafe. Marc, the main lead, embarks on a journey to rescue his girlfriend.
The movie is quite entertaining with a cast of great actors who breathe life into the characters they play. Overall, Los últimos días is well-directed and has an ending that most people won’t expect. It’s worth a watch if you’re a fan of realistic and dramatic apocalyptic movies.
Extraterrestre
- Director: Nacho Vigalondo
- Cast: Michelle Jenner, Raúl Cimas, Carlos Areces, Julián Villagrán, Miguel Noguera
- Release Date: March 23, 2012
If you don’t want a movie that’s too deep or explores a lot of serious themes then you should give Extraterrestre, or Extraterrestrial a watch. Directed by the same person who made Los cronocrímenes, you’re bound to have a fun time with this one.
The movie is about Julio and Julia, who cope with the mutual attraction they seem to have after a one-night stand, while there is an alien spaceship hovering over the city.
The movie is more of a comedy than your average sci-fi movie and uses the looming threat of an alien invasion to cover topics about relationships and infidelity.
Órbita 9
- Director: Hatem Khraiche
- Cast: Clara Lago, Andrés Parra, Álex González, Belén Rueda, John Alex Castillo, Kristina Lilley, Sara Deray, Fernando Campo
- Release Date: April 7, 2017
Órbita 9, or Orbiter 9, is a great watch if you’re a fan of romance in a sci-fi setting. If you’re a fan of The Shape of Water by Guillermo del Toro then you’re going to love the heart-warming themes in this movie.
The story is about Helena, who has lived on a spacecraft her whole life. She sees one last message from her parents, who tell her that her spacecraft is running out of oxygen, which is why they sacrificed their lives to save hers. Soon after this revelation, a ship docks onto hers and she starts to fall for Alex, the occupant of that ship.
In the beginning, the movie seems like it’s just another love story in space. However, the entire movie plays out amazingly and has a few twists and turns when you expect them the least.
Moebius
- Director: Gustavo Mosquera
- Cast: Guillermo Angelelli, Annabella Levy, Roberto Carnaghi, Jorge Petraglia, Fernando Llosa, Miguel Ángel Paludi, Martín Adjemián, Jean Pierre Reguerraz, Daniel Di Biase
- Release Date: October 17, 1996
Moebius is a classic example of how great a low-budget sci-fi movie can be. With an original plot, this Argentinian movie takes some huge risks, some of which play out beautifully in the movie. The setting of this movie is also very unconventional, making it one of the most unique movies you’ll watch in a long time.
The movie is about a topographer who investigates the disappearance of a train and the 30 passengers traveling in it. Unfortunately for Daniel, the lead, tunnel network is huge and complex, making it hard for a guy to navigate alone.
The amazing movie has a great soundtrack, which is surprising for a movie on this budget. Moebius feels timeless, mainly because it has elements of futuristic technology in the current day, making this 1996 movie still a great watch, even today.
