Adventure Activities in Santa Teresa

Santa Teresa is a small fishing town in the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. It has a much more easy-going vibe than the capital, San Jose, or the more touristy Los Suenos Marina. The beauty of Santa Teresa lies in its non-descript nature. Being away from the regular trail of tourists who visit Costa Rica has advantages. One of them is the abundance of adventure activities in and around Santa Teresa.

This blog covers the top adventure activities in Santa Teresa and tips to maximize your fun.

The Call of the Ocean

Watersports are the most popular activity in Santa Teresa. Swimming, snorkeling, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, surfing, sailing, and canoeing—if it involves water and causes thrill, you’ll find a place in Santa Teresa to do it. That said, some activities are more popular than others among thrill seekers.

Surfing is the biggest draw for tourists to this small town. With its beaches offering unique waves, novices and experts can find a spot to ride waves.

Freediving at Santa Teresa strips diving to its essence. It is a challenging sport. Diving deep on a single breath has risks, but it’s a serene underwater experience for those who love it.

Scuba diving can be a good choice for beginners or novices who want to enjoy underwater experiences. It complements the implicit challenge of freediving by using underwater breathing apparatus to allow longer underwater explorations. It can be a more personal and immersive experience of the vibrant ocean ecosystems and marine life.

Standup paddleboarding, or SUP, is another popular adventure activity for beginners or families.

It is a versatile watersport. It can be the perfect relaxing end to a hectic day or a rigorous workout at the start of an exciting day.

Some popular watersports in Santa Teresa:

  • Surfing
  • Freediving
  • Scuba diving
  • Standup paddleboarding

Fish for Adventure

Inshore fishing and deep ocean fishing charters are popular activities in Santa Teresa.

Inshore fishing stays close to the shore. Charters venture out to waters up to 50 feet deep and target species like Yellowfin Tuna and Roosterfish. This type of fishing is perfect for those who want to enjoy the experience without venturing too far into the open sea.

For those seeking broader horizons, deep ocean fishing charters offer a day filled with greater thrill. These excursions let anglers snag larger fish further offshore.

If you rent a villa in Costa Rica, chances are that they will be able to arrange a private charter for you, which can be a memorable experience.

Explore Wildness

In Santa Teresa, adventures on the beach are not the only escapades to enjoy. There is plenty of thrill in exploring the nearby nature reserve or the surrounding area’s biodiversity.

Horseback riding along the coast or through nearby trails can offer an offbeat adventure if you enjoy equestrianism.

ATV tours are also a great way to enjoy a pulse-raising experience and the rugged landscapes along the trails near Santa Teresa.

You can ride the ATV and visit the Cabo Blanco nature reserve nearby. It’s a slice of raw, untamed nature.

Plus, it’s perfect for families—the wildlife will amaze kids. This reserve offers a glimpse of Costa Rica as it once was, unspoiled and teeming with life. There are no artificial attractions here. It’s a place where you can truly connect with nature and experience its power and beauty firsthand.

A Day Full of Adventure

Santa Teresa has many landmarks nearby that you can visit on a day trip. A day of adventure from the town can pack in wildlife, waterfalls, and underground wonders.

Montezuma Waterfall is one such place. It is a 45-minute drive away. The hike to the waterfall from the small town of Montezuma is challenging. But the natural beauty at the waterfall is remarkable.

Alternatively, you can go caving in Barra Honda National Park for a unique adventure. You will get your choice of tour operators—there are plenty to choose from in the nearby towns, or you can book one from Santa Teresa.

Santa Teresa is Waiting

The sleepy town has enough activities around it to make stays fun-filled.

Whether you enjoy physical activities or want to explore the surrounding regions, Santa Teresa, Costa Rica has activities for solo travelers and families. It is the perfect mix of the laid back and adventurous.
