Conceptually, this prevents a data packet from bouncing in loops and suffering network congestion or failures. Ethernet Networks were susceptible to broadcast storms, a phenomenon in which multiple copies of the same data packet travel endlessly between switches; this could bring down an entire network. This idea was used to implement the algorithm behind Perlman’s spanning tree, where network bridges could talk and agree which one of them will shut down its path so that they can prevent loops.
