Some employers are willing to cover part of the students’ tuition costs. But what do companies want in return?

Going to college seems like an impossible task for some due to increasing tuition costs. But what about having your employer cover part of this amount? Amazon and Boeing aren’t the only ones offering programs that will help pay for your tuition. In fact, there are lesser-known companies and startups that are also willing to help with education.

Who are these companies and what opportunities do they offer for students? Let’s find out.

Student training programs from the biggest employers

By 2025, four of the largest American employers have developed special programs for students to help them with their education. This is good support for those who want to study, but are not ready to take out a for the sake of education.

Amazon

Any employee who has worked full-time for at least 90 days can participate in the Amazon Career Choice program. The company covers part of the costs for various types of training, including helping to obtain GED or ESL certificates for migrant workers.

To participate, you need to enroll in one of Amazon’s partner educational institutions. The list of all partners and their location is in the section on the official website — AWS Partner. The program covers the cost of training in advance, and also reimburses the cost of books and fees within the annual limit.

Boeing

The company is ready to reimburse tuition for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and can also offer scholarships for children of employees. In addition, Boeing will pay part of the cost of a pilot’s license and return the fee for exams for some professional certifications. All of this is described in detail in the corporate section — Learning Support.

Such benefits are especially advantageous for graduate students: Boeing is ready to allocate up to $25,000 per year to obtain a degree. Moreover, if you enroll in departments related to mathematics, science or technology at partner universities, there is no funding limit.

Starbucks

Under the College Achievement Plan program, Starbucks covers the cost of tuition for thousands of employees by fully prepaying for courses and fees in the online program of the University of Arizona. Moreover, those who have worked for the company for a long time and used benefits under the G.I. Bill direction, can transfer this support to a family member.

You can participate from your first working day, but you must meet certain conditions, which are described on the Starbucks website in the section “Training”.

Walmart

With the program Live Better U from Walmart you can fully cover the cost of tuition for undergraduate programs at partner universities if you choose a suitable specialty. Moreover, you can apply for this benefit immediately after employment, regardless of whether you work full-time or have received a part-time position.

Innovative and niche approaches to student education

Approaches to student education have changed significantly in the last two or three years: now the emphasis is on flexibility, practicality and relevance of knowledge. Programs with an interdisciplinary approach which combine different fields are gaining popularity – for example, technology and humanities, economics and design. This format helps students develop their visual acuity and teaches them to apply knowledge in a variety of areas.

Experiential learning is also gaining momentum – this is when you learn not only in theory, but in practice, drawing conclusions from real situations. In such conditions, programs that help techies and young professionals quickly adapt to real conditions are in demand.

Pathrise

Pathrise has come up with a program for tech students who want to study but cannot afford expensive tuition. The company helps improve skills, improve resumes, prepare for interviews and make useful connections.

Mentors work individually to accurately understand the student’s needs and find them a suitable job as quickly as possible.

It is noteworthy that payment must be made only after employment, giving a percentage of the income during the first year of work. More about this can be found on the оfficial Pathrise website.

Holiverse

In 2025, the updated Holiverse Academy has been launched in the metaverse – a platform for those who want to master cryptocurrencies, share knowledge and build their communities in virtual reality. Holiverse thus supports students, the unemployed and people with disabilities, helping them socially adapt, find a job in their field and finally — to become professionals.

Teachers can use the platform’s tools to organize online classes, develop educational courses, and attract students from all over the world.

Holiverse has held a series of events this year, and one of them is planned for the eve of International Students’ Day 2024. Participants will have lectures from the experts in the field of cryptocurrency, sports, and film industries. The event will also feature contests and activities in which you can test yourself and meet future colleagues and friends from different countries.

Why do companies help students pay for education?

For an employer, paying for a student’s tuition is an investment that pays back significantly. Just think about it: an employee who has just completed a course returns to his tasks with new knowledge. He or she works faster and more efficiently.

However, it’s not about speed. Teaching a student is more about smarter decisions, fewer mistakes, and improving the quality of work in general.

But tuition is not only about technology. It is also about motivation. This is especially true for the IT sector, where specialists are being hunted a lot. In this case, it is important to keep your best people. Those who will understand that through sponsored training you want to tell them – “You are important.” And it works.

And now – what is the benefit for a student when the employer pays for education?

Well,in everything! Imagine that you are studying not at your own expense, but at the expense of a company that is interested in your growth. Especially if you do it with the understanding that the knowledge will be immediately used in practice. At the same time, you do not need to build “castles in the air” in your head with dreams of a dizzying career, but you should focus on acquiring real skills that will help you grow.

Plus, this is a great way to make a fast step forward. When the employer pays for courses, master classes, you accelerate professionally: learn from the best, learn new approaches, expand your horizons
