How to Avoid Common Mistakes in MyMathLab Homework?

MyMathLab

A common scenario among students working with MyMathLab is the confusion over the ‘wrong answer’. They know the answer is right, yet the platform shows it as incorrect. What might be the reason? Well, math is not an easy subject to understand, but when it comes to MyMathLab, there are numerous reasons beyond just understanding the concept.

The LMS developed by Pearson aims to help students interactively learn math. However, the questions and assignments on the platform follow a certain format, and you need to submit your answer in that format to get the ‘green tick.’

This blog aims to help you with ways to avoid common mistakes in MyMathLab homework.

The Ways to Avoid Mistakes in MyMathLab Homework

Students often skip the important parts, like reading the question properly or going through the guidelines before working on the problems. These are two of the major reasons they make mistakes in their homework. To ensure you get all your answers correct and don’t waste your time thinking about where you went wrong, follow these steps:

1.  The Pre-Game Plan

The most common mistakes happen even before you start solving a problem. The best way to avoid it is proper preparation. Here’s how you can do it:

  • Review the concepts first – MyMathLab is designed to help students practice and learn. You cannot expect the platform to teach you a concept from scratch. So, before you start working on a problem, take some time to go through the notes or go through the summary in the e-text. It will help refresh the formulas and methods, thus helping you answer the questions correctly.
  • The ‘Scratch Paper’ system – Do not try solving a problem in your mind. Instead, keep a separate scratch paper to write down the steps and circle your final answer. This will not only help you input MyMathLab answers, but will also help you find out where you went wrong in case the platform marks your answer incorrect. Further, it also acts as an effective study guide.
  • Read the question and instructions properly – The biggest mistake any student can make is not reading the question and instructions properly. MyMathLab provides specific formatting instructions in a blue box above the answer field. Go through it, and look for phrases like:
  • Round to two decimal places as needed
  • Type an integer or a simplified fraction
  • Use a comma to separate answers as needed
  • Express numbers in terms of ℼ

2. The Input Trap: Avoiding Platform-Specific Errors

The frustration of ‘I know I was right’ stems from these input errors. You need to understand what MyMathLab expects, and these are what you must look out for:

  • The formatting problems – MyMathLab makes a crucial differentiation between exact answers and approximate answers. If the correct answer is 1/3, putting 0.33 will be considered wrong, since that is an approximation. You need to put the exact answer to get it correct.
  • Follow instructions to the letter – If MyMathLab instructs you to round off to the nearest hundredth, you must do it. So, if the answer is 5.738, you need to put in 5.74, not 5.7 or 5.738.
  • Simplify your answer – The platform follows a simple rule: if an answer can be simplified, it must be done. If the correct answer to your question is 4/8, MyMathLab expects it to be 1/2. Take some time to understand if the answer can be simplified before you click on ‘submit.’
  • Double-check before you submit – This is universal to all kinds of math problems. You must double-check your answer before submitting it for evaluation. Cross-check it with your scratch paper and the instructions. You can also ask for help from a ‘take my online class for me’ expert to be double sure.

3. Use MyMathLab’s Tools Wisely

MyMathLab might seem complicated, but it also comes with a few tools that can help you solve the problems. Students often make the mistake of using the tools incorrectly and fail to answer the questions correctly. Let’s help you understand the tools:

  • ‘View an Example’ and ‘Help Me Solve This’ – The ‘view an example’ helps you with a walkthrough with a similar problem, but with different numbers. The ‘help me solve this’ takes you through a step-by-step solution for the exact problem. However, when you use this, MyMathLab will mark your answer incorrect and generate a new one. Use ‘view an example’ to understand and keep ‘help me solve this’ as your last resort.
  • The ‘Similar Question’ Tool – Use this tool to solve a question similar to the problem you are working on. This can help you strengthen your skills and build your confidence. Further, in case MyMathLab shows your answer as incorrect after you have used all your attempts, use this tool to practice and learn the concepts.

4. Learn from Your Mistakes

The biggest mistake any student makes is not learning from their mistakes. You must not skip these steps if you want to get all your answers correct:

  • Review your submissions – Once the due date of an assignment has passed, go through the MyMathLab gradebook and click on the assignment. Review all the questions, including the one you got wrong. Click on the red ‘x’ and the system will show you both the incorrect and correct answers. Understand where you went wrong to learn from your mistakes.
  • Identify patterns – Identify where you are going wrong and work on the weak areas. It will help you rectify the mistakes and turn these mistakes into a study guide.

Putting It All Together: Your Path to MyMathLab Mastery,

Making mistakes while solving MyMathLab problems is not only about using an incorrect formula; it is also about using the incorrect format. To ensure you are on the right track, you need to master both the subject and the platform. You need to focus on the questions and instructions to find the correct answer.

Go through the questions and instructions properly, use scratch paper and the built-in tools wisely to ensure you are on the right track
