A quick guide to buying a second-hand watch for all seasons

If you’re thinking about investing in a watch you can wear from January drizzle to July sunshine (and everything in between), you’re in the right place.

Here, we’ll explore how to select a watch that remains stylish and resilient regardless of the season.

How to find a timeless design

If you want something you can wear year-round, you need to consider the strap. For instance, leather is ideal for dry weather, while rubber straps are great for water exposure and sweat.

Fabric straps may be a good choice in the summer months, as they are lightweight and often dry quickly.

Being able to swap your strap depending on the season gives you extra flexibility.

When it comes to design, go for simple styles if you want a watch that won’t look dated after a year or two.

Classic dials, neutral colours (such as white, black, silver or gold), and well-balanced proportions may age better.

A solid example of a premium choice is second-hand Omega watches, such as the Seamaster or Speedmaster lines.

Their design is classic, they have a good reputation for quality and come in a range of styles and colours to suit your taste.

How to ensure your timepiece holds up throughout the year

If your watch is going to live through British winters, sudden downpours and summer humidity, you’ve got to pick with robustness in mind.

For instance, choosing a timepiece that offers water resistance may be beneficial.

A watch offering at least 100 m (10 ATM or 10 bar) gives you peace of mind for use in showers, pools and so on.

Materials also matter. For instance, ceramic bezels and hardened steel can resist scratching and corrosion.

Avoid plated metals if you can, as plating can wear off over time, reducing the lifespan of your timepiece.

What to look for when buying a second-hand watch

When shopping for a second-hand watch, here are some things to look out for:

  • Trusted sellers: Buy from a dealer with a good reputation for their pre-owned offerings.
  • Authenticity: Make sure the watch has been inspected and authenticated by trained specialists.
  • Condition: Find out the condition of the timepiece, such as whether it has scratches or replacement parts.
  • Warranty and return policy: Reputable sellers often offer a warranty for used watches, so it’s worth checking this before you buy.
  • Resale value: Some brands and models hold value better. Even as you shop for yourself, think ahead: if you change your mind in a few years, having a watch that retains demand is a bonus.

By following these tips and servicing your timepiece regularly, you’ll end up with a companion you can enjoy year-round — regardless of the weather.
