A new house must-haves checklist: The first essential items you should purchase for every room

There is nothing more exciting than being a first-time homeowner. However, despite all the enthusiasm, you might also feel pretty overwhelmed because a new home comes with many responsibilities and a huge list of essential things to buy, and everything seems to be a must. However, we should work on priorities, so it would be best to establish some boundaries and, of course, a budget to make sure you don’t break the bank before moving to your new place. Understandably, furniture is your top priority, but most probably, you have already figured it out. Besides that, you will also need some smaller things that could make your house feel like home. So, to make the process easier and take some work off your shoulders, in this article, you can find a must-haves checklist for your new house so you can have everything ready before moving:

Cleaning supplies

It might sound obvious, but it’s worth mentioning that you can’t move to your new house without having it properly cleaned. All the makeover steps have probably led to a lot of dust and bacteria, so it would be best to have your cleaning products ready for work. So, make sure you purchase a couple of bottles of cleaning sprays, paper towels, and disinfectant wipes for the surfaces. Also, a must-have is a vacuum cleaner, as it’s probably one of the first items you are going to use in your new place. Moreover, a mop is just as important as the next step after vacuuming the floor.

Kitchen essentials

Many say that the kitchen is the heart of your home, so we are going to start from that. It’s the room where you most likely spend the most time, as it’s where you start and finish your day, so having all you need to begin and end up in a good mood is essential. First of all, you might want to start from the basics with silverware or plates because, after all, how else could you enjoy your breakfast? Obviously, you will also need the proper appliances, such as a fridge, but we are sure you’ve already figured it out. Then, you can move to the hidden parts of your room, because you will surely need a kitchen bin, because since it’s the most trafficked place in your house, a lot of waste is produced by the end of the day, and, to keep it compact and avoid implementing multiple compartments that would steal space, consider purchasing a dual bin. Additionally, don’t forget about the dish soap and sponge because no one wants a new sink filled with dirty dishes.

Bathroom essentials

Your bathroom should be guest-ready or even spa-like as well, so because it can be easy to forget that your new house doesn’t come with all the essentials and you have to buy them yourself, here are some must-haves. First of all, you should purchase something less glamorous but essential, such as toilet paper, and then a few towels for your family and guests (make sure you always have some extra). Of course, don’t forget about the soap and your usual shower products to embrace your routine in your new house, toothbrushes, and a bath mat to avoid making a mess when you step out of your tub. A shower curtain would be a great idea as well, together with a toilet brush and a plunger, a wastebasket to dispose of wet towels and make-up remover wipes, and a laundry basket if you don’t have a separate laundry room since your washing machine will most likely be placed in the bathroom.

Living room essentials

Of course, when it comes to the living room, you might immediately think about comfort, so if you want to enjoy your new room when you step inside for the first time, consider purchasing your sofa in advance. Also, to avoid missing your favourite show on Netflix, don’t forget to unpack your TV, which you can put on any flat surface while you wait for your furniture to arrive. It’s also important to have a small table for depositing your smaller items and some cushions for your sofa to create the comfort you seek. You would also need some curtains to take a nap in complete darkness after a long day and, to make the most of your room, a mood light that could set the atmosphere.

Bedroom essentials

Obviously, the first thing you need for your bedroom is a bed, because that is the core of your room. Even if you are still waiting for your furniture to arrive, but you want to move to your new house, a mattress can be enough, and you can add the frame later. Consider also buying a small nightstand for provisory storage space, and, of course, you would also need some duvets, pillows, and sheets. A floor lamp is also a must-have, and, like for the living room, don’t forget to buy some curtains so you can sleep peacefully without waking up as soon as the sun rises before your alarm.

Extras

Finally, it would be best to be prepared for any situation. So, consider having in your new house a first-aid kit and a fire extinguisher for emergencies, buy additional extension cords for the rooms that don’t have many outlets, an iron and ironing board to have your outfits ready and ironed in the morning, some hangers, a tool kit in case you detect some malfunctions, and for your safety consider also installing a home security system with surveillance cameras and secure door locks.

Final thoughts

Now that you have a checklist of the essential items you need to purchase for your new house, it’s time to pack and move to your new place confidently. Don’t worry, we are going to think about the final design later!
